History of the hunting Knife

handmade damascus pocket knives
Knives have been used as weapons, tools, and utensils since prehistoric times. However, it is only recently that knives have been designed specifically for tabletop use. The hosts did not provide cutlery to their guests in the Middle Ages in Europe. Most people wore their own knives in sheaths attached to their belts. These knives were narrow and their pointed ends were used to harp foods to bring them to their mouths to eat.

Long after the adoption of table knives, they continued to be used as weapons. Thus, the versatile nature of the knife continued to pose the threat of danger at the dinner table. However, once forks became accepted as a more efficient way of picking up food, there was no need for the dangerous pointy tip of the "dinner knife".

In 1669, King Louis XIV decreed that all sharp knives in the street or used at the dinner table were "illegal" and he ordered that all knife points be crushed, like those used today ... in order to reduce violence!

Other design changes took place after grinding the tip of the knife ... the cutlers began to make the blunt ends wider and rounder for ease of use, in combination with the first two-toothed fork ". Many handmade Damascus pocket knives were designed with handles rather like pistol grips and a blade that curved backward so that the wrist would not have to be twisted to get food to the mouth!

The birth of the "round-tripped" knife in Europe has had a lasting effect on the American label. At the beginning of the 18th century, relatively few forks were imported to America. However, knives were still imported with the ends becoming increasingly blurred. Since the Americans had very few forks to eat and did not have sharp knives, they had to use spoons instead of forks. Using the spoon to stabilize the food while cutting, then passing the spoon to the other hand to pick up and eat.

The use of knives as weapons and tools goes back to prehistory. The first knives were in Flint. The first metal knives were symmetrical double-edged daggers, made from copper ... the first single-fox knife was made in the Bronze Age 4000 years ago. These knives were used for hunting, cooking, and carpentry.

The knives were used for the first time as cutlery 500 years ago ... here is an example of a Tudor Diner set. Before that, people would wear their own knife in a sheath attached to their belt. These knives were narrow and their pointed ends were used to throw food rather than using a fork, as we do today.
There are types of endless knives that have been designed by man over the years ... with many different goals. It is important to remember that any "knife" ... can inflict serious or fatal injury! The most wonderful use of a knife invented to actively save a life is the "Surgical Knife" ... a wonderful invention used by skilled hands for surgeons as well as veterinary surgeons!

How many uses for the sake of "man" can you think of ...?
