History of the hunting Knife
Knives have been used as weapons, tools, and utensils since prehistoric times. However, it is only recently that knives have been designed specifically for tabletop use. The hosts did not provide cutlery to their guests in the Middle Ages in Europe. Most people wore their own knives in sheaths attached to their belts. These knives were narrow and their pointed ends were used to harp foods to bring them to their mouths to eat. Long after the adoption of table knives, they continued to be used as weapons. Thus, the versatile nature of the knife continued to pose the threat of danger at the dinner table. However, once forks became accepted as a more efficient way of picking up food, there was no need for the dangerous pointy tip of the "dinner knife".
